INTRODUCTION

Vitamins are Micro nutrients these are extremely important for normal functioning of the body. These enable various chemical reactions to occur in our body. They are required in very small amount. Vitamin is called productive food and also known as growth factor. They are discovered in 1881 by N.I Lunin. It is essential for normal growth of life. Vitamin are organic chemicals required by the body for its various metabolic processes and for the normal working of the body. Metabolic processes refers to the biological processes that living organisms uses to provide energy for the sustaining life and growth. They are required in small amount. They are vital for the body.

Lack of vitamin can cause scurvy disease which occurs due to deficiency of vitamin c , beriberi disease which occurs due to deficiency of vitamin B. Ricked disease which occurs due to deficiency of vitamin D. Pellagra disease due to deficiency of vitamin C etc. We need vitamins in milligrams.

Classification of vitamins

VITAMIN A :-

FUNCTION

  2. It is very important for children.
  3. Lack of vitamin can hinder the growth.
  4. It is essential for eye sight.

DEFICIENCY

  1. In children cause prickles on hands and legs.
  2. One may catch cold , cough and formation of stones in urinary tract in lack of vitamin a.
  3. Blindness , Night blindness , colour blindness.

  • Milk , Egg yolk , Yellow Vegetables , mango , papaya , etc.

VITAMIN D :-

FUNCTIONS

  1. It helps to keep the teeth and bones strong , firm and in a right shape.
  2. It helps in the utilization and absorption of calcium and phosporic acid.
  3. Maintains normal functioning of parathormone (parathyroid hormone).

DEFICIENCY

  1. Lack of vitamin D causes rickets in children and bones become weak.
  2. Softening of bones

  • Egg, , liver of ship , cod liver of oil , shark liver oil , pure milk , etc.
  • Natural source of vitamin D is sun rays.

VITAMIN E :-

FUNCTION

  1. It is required for coagulation of blood.
  2. It is used in anti aging creams because it keeps the skin healthy.
  3. It also mantain normal functioning of reproductive organs.

DEFICIENCY

  1. Lack of the vitamin can cause abortion.
  2. Nerve damage

  • This vitamin is also known as anti bleeding vitamin.

  • It helps in metabolism carbohydrates and maintain health and efficiency of muscles and nerves
